About CAMP Cornwall
In July 2017, with support from the Citizen Security and Justice Programme (CSJP) in the Ministry of National Security, VPA organised and began implementation of the Child Abuse Mitigation Project (CAMP) Cornwall — a hospital-based intervention at the Cornwall Regional Hospital to reduce the effects of violence on children and youth in the parish.
This is based on the model used at the UNICEF-supported CAMP Bustamante at the Bustamante Hospital for Children in the early 2000’s. Dedicated Social Workers seek the best social interventions available to help reduce the risks associated with violence.
Overall Objectives
- 1.To be a culturally sensitive and appropriate hospital-based violence prevention intervention.
- 2.To be a site for best practices in the management of children who have been hurt by violence and abuse.
- 3.To provide a stimulus for behaviour change to reduce recidivism.
- 4.To ensure a unified and consistent approach as an early response, and for follow-up treatment.
- 5.To contribute to the institutionalization of hospital-based responses in the trauma care system of the Ministry of Health.
Approaches to Case Management
Case management should simultaneously be holistic, child rights-based, and have a community and family focus. Intervention targets include:
- Attention to optimum development of child victims of violence — physically, emotionally, socially and cognitively
- Upholding the rights of the child victim at all times
- Recognizing that the family and community are ideally the first line of response
- Building capacity through collaboration with CSJP, PMI and other stakeholders
